Strong and healthy eyes are a blessing. Many of us are carefree and take 20/20 vision for granted, but when eye issues arise and include the potential risk of losing clear vision, we would do anything to restore our eyesight. Here are some symptoms indicating that your eyes need to be examined.
Peripheral Vision Loss (PVL):
Peripheral vision loss, also known as tunnel vision occurs when you cannot see objects unless they are exactly in front of you. This is a sign of glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged due to fluid buildup in the eye, creating pressure. If glaucoma is left untreated, it can lead to complete blindness.
Cloudy Vision:
A healthy lens has a clear vision because the light can pass through the retina so the images can be processed. When there is a cataract in the way of light, the images are unable to be distinguished, leading to cloudy vision. Cataracts are formed gradually and start affecting your vision.
Floaters:
Floaters do not indicate a serious eye problem, but if they are present for prolonged periods, there might be a risk of retinal detachment. If you see a dark veil across eyes of excessive floaters than usual, it is time you need to consult an eye doctor.
Colour Blindness:
If you are unable to differentiate between colours or cannot see certain colours, you might be colourblind. This is because cone cells in your eye are not functioning. A checkup is necessary.
Red Eyes:
Sometimes after working for prolonged periods or late at night, your eyes might be bloodshot. This is because the surface of your eyes is covered with vessels that can be infected or irritated. It also might be a symptom of eyestrain which can be a serious problem.
Night blindness:
Night blindness can be caused because of the age factor. Apart from that if you find it hard to find your way around areas with low lighting, it is possibly night blindness. It is a symptom of nearsightedness, keratoconus, cataracts, or vitamin A deficiency.
Excessive tearing:
Sensitive eyes lead to excessive tearing. Your eyes might be reacting to the surrounding wind or temperature. It is better to wear sunglasses and shield eyes. Tearing may also indicate a blocked tear duct or an eye infection. In that case, a checkup is necessary.
Lazy Eyes:
When one eye is unable to develop completely, the vision tends to get weaker, and the eye does not move accordingly. The lazy eye is also known as amblyopia. If treated early, it would help in avoiding lifelong problems.
Cross Eyes:
Cross eyes are also called strabismus. It happens when one of your eyes has weak muscles. You can correct cross eyes with vision therapy or surgically.
Pinkeye:
Pinkeye can be a sign that you have developed a case of conjunctivitis. Symptoms might be itching, burning, discharge, or tearing. Possible causes are exposure to chemicals and irritants or allergies. It is necessary to schedule a checkup with your doctor if any of the symptoms mentioned above bother you for too long.
